The Autism Society of America describes Autism: "Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and is the result of a neurological disorder that affects the normal functioning of the brain, impacting development in the areas of social interaction and communication skills. Both children and adults with autism typically show difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions, and leisure or play activities. One should keep in mind however, that autism is a spectrum disorder and it affects each individual differently and at varying degrees - this is why early diagnosis is so crucial. By learning the signs, a child can begin benefiting from one of the many specialized intervention programs."

When I was trained to become a yoga teacher I learned about everything ranging from Parkinsons to Scoliosis to Fibro Myalgia. Over the last few years I've been able to teach so many different kinds of people, and it's been such a blessing.

Two years ago I got a call from the mother of a 12 year old autistic boy, wondering if I could do some private yoga lessons with him. When I first met Clark, he didn't give eye contact and was very timid. He had trouble focusing but was determined to do things right and did very well for his first few classes. After some time passed I started seeing a difference, he would have conversations with me and pay attention while I was teaching. He became extremely good at yoga as his concentration improved. I was surprised and amazed by his growth in and out of the yoga classroom. I later met Aaron while I was in India doing some extra yoga training. I wasn't able to spend as much time with him as I wanted to, but I saw quite a bit of improvement. The first lesson we had, he only did one pose and refused to do anymore. By the fourth lesson he did a 20 minute yoga lesson! And the third autistic kid I've been blessed to work with is Kelly. I taught her for over a year and truly enjoyed my time with her. She is such a loving and sweet person and improved by leaps and bounds. By the end of our training she was able to do a full 12 pose sequence all on her own. In my experience of teaching her, she ended up teaching me so much.

I'm looking forward to doing a lot of work with Autistic children in the future!
